Kite Liberator

December 6th, 2009

A little controversy goes a long way. Many years ago now, Kite made the rounds as the cool anime of the month. Director Yasuomi Umetsu had made a name for himself with his beautiful work from the “Presence” section of Robot Carnival, but the sexuality and ultraviolence on display in his Megazone 23 Part 2 were a foretaste of what [...]

Mospeada: Love Live Alive

December 6th, 2009

Reality check: though I loved Robotech as a young teen, I’ve never watched the three series that made up that seminal show in their uncut Japanese versions.  While I own them all and have watched bits over time, I’ve never found the opportunity to sit down and get through them. Part of that’s due to their age; [...]

Big Wars

November 19th, 2009

Sometimes, shorter is better. At only 71 minutes, Big Wars is one of the shorter feature films one finds in anime. Nevertheless, this motion picture works because right from the title on down, it knows exactly what it is: a B-grade alien shootout. Big Wars has two distinct sections. It doubles as an oddball …

The Big O/The Big O II

November 19th, 2009

I grew up on big robots. From Battle of the Planets to Voltron, my childhood had them aplenty. And, of course, Robotech, the show that took transforming mecha to a whole new level, was the lynchpin to my anime addiction that now is seen weekly via this website. I also like film noir, …

Battle Skipper

November 19th, 2009

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, or so the saying goes. If so, Battle Skipper is ninety minutes of genuine sycophancy towards the whole of the anime canon. This pretty-looking 3-OVA series (wrongly advertised as a movie in its DVD incarnation) has action, giggling teenagers, fan service, mecha, and girlpower galore. Problem is, …

Battle Royal High School

November 19th, 2009

For years, AnimEigo has been the boutique shop of American anime distributing. They’ve established a reputation based on releasing older favorites and occasionally picking up a new license, rather than being gung-ho to get their hands on the latest and greatest titles. They’re also known for quality in their physical product, going back and correcting [...]

Battle Athletes

First impressions are important. The interview for that position you’ve been drooling over is going to go better or worse based on what the people on the other side of the table think of you after just a couple of minutes. The date that just walked across the room to your barstool may already have [...]

Battle Angel

November 19th, 2009

It’s hard to review a movie, even a great one, if you’ve only seen the first hour. Could you imagine watching Jurassic Park and ending off just when the raptors escape? Or what if Star Wars ended with the death of Obi-Wan and the Millenium Falcon’s escape from the Death Star, without the battle to [...]

Bastard!

November 19th, 2009

It’s always interesting to deal with the Japanese understanding of our language. Watch enough anime, and you’ll see folks strangle the English language in all sorts of unique and interesting ways. (Not that I could do any better with Japanese…) Then there comes a show called Bastard! It actually gets it right, amazingly enough. The [...]
